Project Title: Thermal management in Li batteries using supercapacitors

Required EE Area(s) of Expertise: Analog, digital, and power electronics

Brief Project Description: PolyMaterials APP (https://www.polymaterialsapp.com/) is offering a solution to the demand of energy storage by designing systems including supercapacitors. In this project, PolyMaterials is aiming to design an electronic circuit that can be used with supercapacitors as a supplementary energy storage to Li-batteries. The targeted system should include sensors to monitor the charge status and temperature of a Li battery and accordingly, through a smart algorithm (preferably a machine learning algorithm), balance the energy source between the battery and a supercapacitor. A compact circuit design and a power efficient system is expected at the end of the project.

Major system products expected from this project: A. Design a microcontroller based system to measure various sensors. B. Design controllable current sources for charging supercapacitors. C. Design power switches to match voltages between the battery and supercapacitors. D. Reporting the results and documenting the design of the developed system.

Parts of the project that “Engineering Design” is expected (e.g., mathematical calculations and/or verification simulations): Please see project description for details !

The level of support (Time: technical guidance, materials, computing, financial, etc.) for the project. If no financial support will be provided, please offer an estimate of the Materials Cost: The team has to commit to meet regularly (weekly) with Dr. Takshi all through both semesters. The parts needed for the project will be purchased through the company supported fund to USF.
