Project Title: Intelligent Measurement Unit Design for Smart Grids

Required EE Area(s) of Expertise: 1) Analog and Digital Electronics 2) Power Systems 3) PCB Design 4) Signal Processing

Brief Project Description: There is growing need of understanding and making the smart power grids reliable and resilient. The project design purpose is to inspire students to explore measurement unit design for smart grid applications used in operation, control and protection, including phase-locked loop (PLL) for three-phase voltage magnitude, frequency and angle measurements, phasor measurement units (voltage phasor, current phasor, real/reactive power, and frequency), and fault current phasor estimation. Therefore, a proper starting point will be simulation for analog electronics circuits (Pspice or MATLAB SimScape Special Power Systems). Major components being analog like OpAmps, analog multipliers etc. The simulation shall be verified and evaluated by Dr. Miao prior to the hardware implementation. Further, experimental verification is required using discrete components and will be implemented incrementally within some iterations. The end goal is to have a working PCB that should be able to perform some c

Major system products expected from this project: 1) A series of software simulations for sensor circuit, 2) A complete set of PCBs designs for smart grid applications, 3) Final fabricated PCBs for testing.

Parts of the project that “Engineering Design” is expected (e.g., mathematical calculations and/or verification simulations): 1) The designed PCBs should be able to successfully detect over current conditions and read power quality parameters; 2) Same dynamic responses or trends are expected for the implementation to show as observed from step-by-step simulations. 3) Error rate is expected to be within 5% from analysis and simulations.

The level of support (Time: technical guidance, materials, computing, financial, etc.) for the project. If no financial support will be provided, please offer an estimate of the Materials Cost: 1) Technical guidance by Dr. Miao (weekly for 1 hours minimum); 2) Access for necessary PSpice simulation software; 3) Access for real time testing facilities; 4) In case financial support is not provided, some budget towards project implementation may be offered.
