Project Title: Pollution Prediction in a City Due to Events

Required EE Area(s) of Expertise: Basic Math and Programming skills, Engineering Design, API, Data Filtering and Analysis, Machine Learning

Brief Project Description: Pollution is leading environmental threat to health of people living in urban communities. Although clean air laws and regulations have improved the air quality in most large cities, it is still a problem for communities in specific areas whenever an event or specific season begins. To be more precise movements of humans increases or decreases pollution that can be due to driving or waste left behind them. What if we can provide a tool that can estimate and predict the pollution due to specific events? The objective of this project is to develop a tool that can help communities to understand the pollution footprint they are left behind after an event or daily activities in a dynamic real-time basis. The starting point is to gather pollution data available from sources such as satellite or pollution sensors. Additionally, build a small air quality sensor network (using Raspberry PI or other low cost kits) for monitoring.

Major system products expected from this project: 1. Build air quality sensor network for data collection and monitoring 2. Create a Spark based tableau/Power BI dashboard indicated pollution and predicted pollution due to specific event 3. A website to deliver dashboard results and setup as a GIT project.

Parts of the project that “Engineering Design” is expected (e.g., mathematical calculations and/or verification simulations): 1. Build API to collect various data (Social Scrapping/Weather Scrapping) 2. Clean and transform data into a standard pipeline. 3. Analysis for pollution, Cooperation model for pollution) (Engineering Design) 4. Mapping of information of multiple models to predict possible pollution (Math/ Simulation)

The level of support (Time: technical guidance, materials, computing, financial, etc.) for the project. If no financial support will be provided, please offer an estimate of the Materials Cost: Time: Technical guidance by the mentors (1 hour/week) Materials: GPU based Computer and Cloud Platform (AWS, GCP) access, Sensors Cost: ~$1000
