Project Title: 150kW 3-Phase Traction Inverter

Required EE Area(s) of Expertise: Power Electronics Design, Analog Circuit Design – Signal Conditioning with Op Amps, Transistors, Small Signal Transformers, Passive Component selection, Circuit Simulation, Digital Circuit Design – Microprocessor (& maybe CPLD) integration, Buffers, SPI communications, SCI communications, CAN communications, Printed Circuit Board Design, Electric Energy/Electromagnetics/Control Systems

Brief Project Description: Design of a 3-Phase Traction Inverter. Design & simulation of gate driver circuit board. Design of DSP motherboard. If SW is necessary, the DSP could be programmed in C implementing a Field Oriented Control Algorithm of a Perm. Magnet Motor.

Major system products expected from this project: - Design & Simulation of Gate Driver Circuit Board - (optional) PCB Design of Gate Driver Circuit Board - Design of DSP Motherboard - (optional) PCB Design of DSP Motherboard - (optional) Embedded C Firmware of PM Motor FOC Algorithm

Parts of the project that “Engineering Design” is expected (e.g., mathematical calculations and/or verification simulations):

The level of support (Time: technical guidance, materials, computing, financial, etc.) for the project. If no financial support will be provided, please offer an estimate of the Materials Cost: ATS can offer a couple of hours/week of support. We design inverters so we have all of the technical guidance necessary but encourage the students to utilize newer technology when available. We have a reference design for the gate driver board. We can provide a lot of support for the design of the DSP board. We can provide all of the PCB design if necessary. We can procure the prototype boards. We already have the power electronics (IGBT module) and hardware available for this project.
